The Rock Creek Foundation

Psychiatric Recovery

Rock Creek Foundation’s approach to Psychiatric Recovery is not a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all treatment. As unique as the individual is, so too is the treatment. What remains consistent, however, is our operation method. Instead of allowing the problem to guide us, we focus on what optimal health looks like for each individual facing chronic mental illness, either with or without related alcohol and substance abuse.

While these are indeed serious situations, our Psychiatric Recovery options deliberately harness a person’s strengths to enhance their personal identity and self, rather than seeking ways to “fix” them.

How do we bring dignity and hope to our individuals? First, we start with embracing the individual as they are. It takes a village to raise a child and, regardless of age, it takes a community to make an individual feel whole and centered once more, helping them to reach their desired goals.

That’s why our Psychiatric Recovery services are guided by the following principles:

  • Using evidence-based practice and models of care
  • Emphasizing developmental and daily living skills that expand on a person’s unique abilities
  • Harnessing these skills to support and further an individual’s goals of integrating and living within the community
  • Educating individuals about how to recognize symptoms of potential relapse and how to prevent these, therefore enhancing their level of self-trust and sense of independence

Rock Creek’s knowledgeable and compassionate team is present every step of the way during Psychiatric Recovery for our individuals.

While no two treatment plans for individuals participating in Psychiatric Recovery are the same, we’ve seen that our approach does ensure very consistent (and successful!) results. All individuals begin by choosing their own treatment and deciding on their own goals.

These can get progressively deeper and bigger as they master each of their intentions. Time and again, we see that individuals want to flourish and grow their self-identity, as well as heal and grow their relationships with others.

Common experiences for our individuals who have these broad goals can be:

  • Helping them to recognize that difficult feelings and behaviors are normal responses to trauma and stress and not merely symptoms or diagnoses
  • Respecting their autonomy and reinforcing their personal decisions through supportive affirmations
  • Instilling a sense of reliable and tangible hope as they gain access to services that emphasize self-responsibility, empowerment, self-determination, and self-advocacy
  • Embarking on an exploration, with professional support, of how they can use existing community resources and supports
  • Allowing individuals to move through recovery at their own pace and to decide which strategies work best for them

Person-centered care defines everything we do and offer at Rock Creek Foundation. This is the most reliable and consistent way to ensure Psychiatric Recovery individuals have a say in their own life.

Psychiatric Recovery options with Rock Creek Foundation help our individuals address the macro and the micro. We leave no detail of their lives left to chance and we encourage them to take a mindful approach in considering every area of growth and change.

Our support helps enhance our individuals’ experiences on every level through:

  • Preparing for the structure and opportunities that school and employment demand and offer
  • Welcoming a broader understanding of one’s position in the community and building cultural awareness
  • Providing deeply meaningful and truly rewarding chances for creative expression
  • Integrating psycho-education within their daily lives through enhancing personal relationships, being responsible for one’s own emotional regulation, learning how to slowly but surely enhance personal estimation and trust, developing social skills, and recognizing oncoming signs that could spell potential relapse so they can prevent it

Rock Creek Foundation’s approach to Psychiatric Recovery is successful because it is determined by the individual themself. It builds on its own momentum and success, allowing individuals to consistently set greater goals for their own lives.
